Show Notes

Home integration can be an incredibly rewarding industry but also a pretty stressful one. Many integrators work on their own or in small businesses where it’s difficult to find a work-life balance, especially with work on-site often demanding long hours away from home and meeting high client expectations. Uncertainties arising from the pandemic have made things worse. At least half a million more people in the UK may experience mental ill health as a result of COVID-19, says a forecast from The Centre for Mental Health, and that’s likely to rise even higher after the second lockdown. Meanwhile, another survey found that 73% of all building and construction workers feel that their employers did not understand or recognise the early signs of poor mental health, or offer any support. So, what can be done to manage our health and well-being for the better? The Integrated Home Podcast is supported by Ring X Line, Distributed by Meridian, AWE Europe and Sony. We are a Wildwood production and we support Together for Cinema.

Control Options

We’re looking at control in this episode with industry guests, Robin Courtenay of SMC and Jeremy Aston of Channel Smart Buildings. Why have a control system? What are the benefits that a control system brings and do consumers appreciate them? What are the integration challenges, especially when you move beyond AV into lighting, blind, security and HVAC control? We’re also asking who is accountable when things go wrong on a system. Does the buck always stop with the integrator, and how do you handle those situations? In our Hot Seat slot, Robin also reveals the three industry people he’d want to join his rowing boat crew on a transatlantic voyage. This show is recorded in the Head Office of KNX Stockist and KNX Certified Training Centre, BEMCO. The Integrated Home is sponsored by Meridian Audio. The Home Security Opportunity

How big an opportunity is home security for technology integrators? A home burglary happens in the UK every 106 seconds. The Office for National Statistics puts the average cost of a residential burglary in the UK at £3,030, and more than one-third of that is the emotional cost to victims. Experts also agree that we are likely heading for an increase in property crime, driven by economic desperation and the stress associated with long-term unemployment. In this episode, we talk to two integrators who work extensively with home security, Steve Moore from SMC and Michael Glarvey from Luuxx Audio Visual. We also learn about what's involved in growing your home security business, how to do it well and where the pitfalls might be. Integrators, Consultants and Project Managers

This show explores the roles of integrators, consultants and project managers on a connected home project. We have a representative from each profession to help us take a closer look with Dan Eades from integrator, Environ, Davy Currie from consultants, Infracore, and project manager, Ricky West from Regency Grove. How do these relationships work? What benefits do the disciplines bring to a project? And, is the dynamic more about collaboration or confrontation? We’re in the thick of Awards season, so we’ll also be checking out how you can the most of a statement project. Dan is put under the spotlight in our Hot Seat Q&A to tell us the best part of being an integrator and reveal which celebrity he is most often mistaken for. This episode is recorded in the Lutron Experience Centre in London. Our thanks to them and also to pod partners Meridian, AWE and Sony for their support in making the Integrated Home series possible.
